Hi.
I’m Carl Sandrock. I spent 15 years in at the University of Pretoria researching the interface between computers, process control, and people. As part of this research, I developed modelling tools for nonlinear process simulation, specifically focusing on stochastic simulation. I supervised several postgraduate projects in collaboration with industry (Sasol, Sappi and Anglo Platinum) working on exploiting process models for better control, understanding process behaviour and augmenting process engineering skill with algorithmic knowledge discovery.
I am one of the authors of the SHGO optimisation algorithm, which is also included in scipy.optimize.
I contribute to the development of the Psibyl Model Predictive Controller.
I’m currently the Head of Data Science and AI at Traction exploiting the surprising application of process control principles to the problem of brand management and extending my reach into artificial intelligence.
